I'm Gary Vet. I've served the church for
more than forty years as a pastor, a
mentor, and a friend to men in
the hardest seat in the building.

You know how to carry other people's burdens

You've sat with people in the worst weeks of their lives. You've buried their parents and married their children.

Nobody taught you what to do with your own.

So it goes home with you. It shows up in how you answer your wife, how much of you your children actually get, what you do at eleven o'clock at night when the house is quiet.

And here's the part we don't say from the platform: it doesn't stay there. The man at home and the man in the pulpit are the same man. On will eventually tell on the other.

That's not a warning. It's just true, and every pastor who's been at this a while knows it.

What I do and what I don't

I'm not a counselor. I'm not a therapist, and I won't pretend to be one. If what you're carrying needs clinical care, I'll say so plainly and help you find it.

What I do is simpler and, I think, rarer. I sit with pastors and help them think--about the marriage, about the calendar, about the elder who won't let it go, about the think you've stopped praying about.

Not to fix you. To help you look at your life as one life instead of two, and to get the two lines running together again.

I've been in ministry forty years. In four decades I've face nearly anything you're facing right now.

I'm not shocked easily and I don't repeat things.

It's the condition of the work.

I hold a Department of Justice clearance and serve as an FBI chaplain, which means I've spent years in rooms where what's said in the room stays in the room. Men in law enforcement have trusted me with things they could not afford to have repeated.

These men aren't pastors. That's the point--they had every reason to be careful about who they talked to.

I just want to say a word of thanks for Gary Vet. What a tremendously effective and powerful leader he has been for the people in my work life, and for me personally as well. I know Gary because of his continued work with North Carolina state, local and federal police officers.
